KATTENBECK

KARLOVY VARY, CZECH REPUBLIC
ARCHITECTURAL STUDY

The transformation of the Kattenbeck site, a former farmyard of the Tuhnice district, is located in the wider centre of Karlovy Vary. The proposal aims to transform it into a multifunctional city block with high-quality public space. The original farmstead has been preserved and the granary deserves to be preserved for its monumental quality.

The design concept reflects the possibility of phased construction. Functions based on the building programme from housing to parking are designed as separate buildings. This creates a varied structure, of different scales and colours. The fire station and the municipal police station are located in the northern part. The archetypal forms with gable roofs are brick red and teal in color. The truncation of the ridge portion of the roofs illuminates the interior with overhead to basilical light. Both buildings have generous glazing in the ground floor, opening up a view of the interesting internal workings. The façade and roof are made of ceramic slats with gaps so as to unify the form and lighten it at the same time.

In the central part there is a parking house, which is “surrounded” by residential or terraced family houses on the south and east sides. The remaining facades are made of profiled industrial glass. Despite its traffic function, it thus acquires refinement and at the same time softens the visual in the context of the urban environment. To lighten the mass, the higher part of the building is without roofing. The lower part is lowered in the form of a vegetated pitched roof. Between the resulting buildings will be a pedestrian residence street with mature greenery to make the block permeable.

In the eastern part, the development is pushed back, and a public space of the square is created, where the preserved granary becomes a source of activity, which will be transformed into a living object with a gallery, café, and other community functions. The project aims to create an active urban space within the wider centre of Karlovy Vary.
