About the project

The design for the renovation and extension of Pavilion Z is based on the original shape of the building, which consisted of three gradually increasing rectangular volumes. Studio A8000 built upon this foundation with a seamless continuation. The inspiration for the renovation came from a botanical motif and the art of bonsai cultivation. Just as carefully selected leaves are trimmed from a plant to create a lighter and more refined form, the architects removed layers of outdated additions and random elements that had obscured the building’s original character. The pavilion was stripped back to its core. The exposed steel frame is now celebrated and elevated to a defining element of the interior concept.

A central theme of the project was multifunctionality, which became key to reviving the České Budějovice exhibition grounds. The main idea was to create a highly flexible, multipurpose space rather than a single-use hall. The pavilion is designed to host a wide range of events, including trade fairs, exhibitions, conferences, balls, and concerts. It can adapt to a variety of challenges and technical requirements set by different organizers. Not only the architectural, but also the technical aspects of the project were crucial. The main hall is conceived as an open, highly versatile space that can shift configurations—from an exhibition hall to a conference or theater setting, to a ballroom or concert venue. This multifunctionality extends to all parts of the project. For instance, the floor is made of minimalist polished concrete, a material typically found in logistics centers and industrial facilities. Here, however, it serves its purpose efficiently, supporting both heavy machinery during the Země živitelka agricultural fair and elegant gatherings such as concerts by the South Bohemian Philharmonic. Additionally, the entrance hall and main multifunctional space flow naturally into the upper level, which features two more halls. These can be flexibly divided and used as event support areas, exhibition spaces, or conference rooms.
