Cheb Railway Station

For the listed railway station building in Cheb, we designed an extensive reconstruction that sensitively restores the architectural value of the post-war building while preparing it for the present-day needs of passengers and the town.
The current seven-storey station building was built after the Second World War on the site of the original station destroyed by bombing, and remains a striking example of post-war modernist architecture associated with the development of rail transport of its time.
We based the reconstruction on a sensitive restoration of the building's original architectural expression and on returning a number of historic elements to their original form. The façade and interiors will be restored, including the original colour scheme, mosaics, stained glass and other artistic details. The concourse will also be significantly transformed, regaining its original spatial character and representative atmosphere while accommodating current technological and operational requirements.
The most striking transformation awaits the seventh floor of the tower, which will become a multifunctional space with views over the town. It will house the ‘Lighthouse above Cheb’, which became one of the defining motifs of the whole design. We are turning a formerly inaccessible technical floor into a new public landmark with panoramic views of the historic centre, the railway junction and the surrounding landscape. The new function naturally builds on the building's original urban role as a prominent vertical landmark of Cheb and strengthens its identity within the town.
The project also includes new office space and retail units. We have kept the new interventions as sensitive as possible, so that it is clear what is the historic layer and what is the contemporary intervention.
