JANÁČEK CULTURAL CENTRE

BRNO
2003

If in the centre of Brno, then here, this volume, and under the ground! The dominant solitary piece of the complex is the aboveground entry block. It is conceived as a symbolic gem, Kaaba, a musical instrument case hiding a surprise. The internal expressive bar structure with diagonal elements introduces dynamics into a static monumentality of the cube and passes from the entrance area up through the vestibules towards the building’s core. An intentional austerity and simple shapes enhance the monumentality in a dimensionally broken environment. The entrance areas are perfectly transparent thus allowing more complex perception of the surrounding buildings. The flat roof above the main auditory is flush with the streetscape used as a multipurpose urban space. The foyer’s underground volume projects to the exterior in the form of a light line – a joint between the pit and the architecturally composed basement.
