REVOLVING THEATER

TÝN NAD VLTAVOU, CZECHIA
2021

The beginnings of amateur theatre in Týn nad Vltavou date back to 1855, but the first outdoor theatre with a generous area of 1500 square metres was built here in 1921. The stage then consisted of a village of ten buildings. A new stage was initiated in 1983, when its members built a revolving auditorium in Bedřichův sady, on the site of a former castle and Celtic oppidum, in two months and on their own.

The turntable from the 1980s is in need of modernisation due to its decrepit technical condition. The most significant modifications await the spectator area. By respecting the ideal viewing curve, the auditorium will be raised to offer visitors a better view of the performance. Its capacity will also increase, from 220 to 260 spectators. Artists from the Vltavan association can look forward to more than twice as large dressing rooms, while the technicians can enjoy comfortable access directly to the stage. The storage space for equipment, sets and costumes will also be substantially increased. Of course, people with reduced mobility will be able to watch the performance. Unlike the only other Czech revolving auditorium in Český Krumlov, however, benches will be retained here instead of the traditional theatre seats. The theatre will thus retain a certain uniqueness, human scale and tradition. Bedřichovy sady is a popular local park and meeting place. In addition to the theatre, concerts and a summer cinema are held here. The architects therefore decided to underline the importance of the revolving auditorium and acknowledge its importance in the site. The result is an atypical turntable shell made up of programmable ice lights that can be controlled as required. Even passers-by could play with the lights via an app. In fact, when not in play, the theatre will light up like an imaginary interactive lantern in the park.

The design sensitively combines the human touch and warmth of different types of wood with perfect execution and modern technology.
